From Science High to Saint Barnabas: The Journey of Alumnus Jefferson S. Bacoling

By: Dr. Roselle G. Aniceto

The essence of nursing lies not only in skill but also in compassion and Mr. Jefferson S. Bacoling, a proud University of Baguio Science High School Alumnus, Batch 2014, embodies both. Jefferson was honored with the DAISY Award, an international recognition that celebrates nurses for their extraordinary compassionate and skillful care, as nominated by patients, families, and co-workers. Now a Registered Nurse at Saint Barnabas Hospital Medical Center in New York City, Jefferson continues to demonstrate excellence, dedication, and empathy in his profession.

Jefferson’s journey of perseverance and adaptability can be traced back to his formative years at UB Science High. He recalls that his most impactful experiences were his interactions with upperclassmen and learning to navigate student life. These experiences helped him develop resilience, qualities that have guided him in both his career and personal growth. The school’s enduring culture of respect and humility also left a strong impression on him, particularly the tradition of addressing elders as “manong” and “manang”, which continues to influence how he treats others with kindness and deference.

He attributes much of his professional discipline to the values instilled by Science High. “Completing tasks on time and performing to the best of one’s ability” are lessons he continues to uphold as a nurse, especially in moments that demand both precision and empathy. Beyond academics, these principles have become the foundation of his character and work ethic, shaping the way he approaches his responsibilities and interactions with others.

He hopes that future students will continue to foster inclusivity and respect, the same values that molded his path. The UB Science High community proudly celebrates his achievements, honoring him as an embodiment of the school’s excellence and as a shining example of how Science High graduates continue to make a meaningful impact in their chosen fields.

This story aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Good Health and Well-being, which aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. Jefferson S. Bacoling’s dedication to compassionate and high-quality nursing care contributes directly to this goal, highlighting the critical role healthcare professionals play in improving patient outcomes and fostering a culture of empathy and support within the healthcare system.
