The University of Baguio Laboratory Elementary School (UBLES) successfully launched the first session of its outreach program, “Barangay Pagbasa,” on November 15, 2025. This initiative supports early literacy development while fostering stronger community partnerships in UBLES’s adopted barangay, Barangay Salud Mitra.

Guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, by creating a literacy program, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals through the partnership with Barangay Salud Mitra, the program aims to make reading accessible to all children and build meaningful local collaborations. Sixteen (16) recipients from Barangay Salud Mitra participated in the inaugural session.

The session was facilitated by six (6) dedicated UBLES teachers, two (2) committed UBLES alumni, and two ( 2 ) barangay officials led by Sir Virgilio Escano, committee of Education chairman, whose collaboration was vital in making the event a success. Participants underwent one-on-one reading assessments to identify their individual reading levels. For those already proficient, a Reading Time activity provided an opportunity to practice fluency, comprehension, and confidence through engaging story sessions. To complement the literacy activities, learners also took part in singing and dancing, creating an enriching and joyful atmosphere that encouraged expression and active participation.

The successful launch of Barangay Pagbasa marks a significant milestone in UBLES’s commitment to promoting literacy and community engagement. By continuously providing opportunities for children to learn and grow, UBLES reaffirms its dedication to uplifting the local community through education. UBLES looks forward to future sessions filled with learning, joy, and a deeper love of rea
