UB ETEEAP, SBAA host online webinar on Generative AI for students and staff

The University of Baguio, through its Linkages Office – Expanded Tertiary Education Equivalency and Accreditation Program (ETEEAP), in collaboration with the School of Business Administration and Accountancy (SBAA), initiated an online webinar titled “Unleash the Power of Generative AI” on October 17, 2024. The event, conducted via Zoom Teleconference, aimed to explore the transformative potential of artificial intelligence while addressing its associated challenges.

The featured speaker, Mr. John V. Balanquit, Dean of the School of Business Administration and Accountancy (SBAA), guided attendees through a comprehensive discussion on the advantages and risks of utilizing AI technologies. He introduced participants to the various types of AI, focusing on Generative AI, which encompasses applications such as image, text, and audio generation.

Dean Balanquit also emphasized the importance of understanding both the capabilities and limitations of Generative AI. He highlighted ethical considerations and outlined strategies for mitigating the risks associated with AI usage. The discussion included an overview of different types of prompts for Generative AI and practical tips on creating effective prompts, empowering attendees to maximize the potential of these innovative tools.

In closing his discussion talk, Dean Balanquit encouraged participants to harness the benefits of AI responsibly. “Sure, there are some things to worry about, like making sure it’s used fairly and that it doesn’t get too expensive to run,” he stated. 

Following the presentation, participants engaged in a hands-on Generative AI Application Workshop featuring tools like Gemini and ChatGPT. Dean Balanquit provided step-by-step guidance on navigating these AI platforms, ensuring attendees gained practical experience utilizing these technologies effectively. Dean Balanquit also urged the University and faculty to establish guidelines for monitoring students’ use of AI tools, ensuring their responsible and appropriate application.

The webinar attracted a diverse audience, including students from various academic programs and staff members from different offices.

This event aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education. By equipping students and staff with knowledge and skills related to AI, UB is actively contributing to developing a tech-savvy and informed community.
