UB Science High School Conducts Journalism Training for RSPC Aspirants at Kias Elementary School

Written by Angelo V. Manis

In its continuing commitment to community engagement and educational outreach, the
University of Baguio Science High School (UBSHS) conducted a Journalism Training for the
Regional Schools Press Conference (RSPC) on October 9, 2026, at Kias Elementary School. The initiative benefited two student journalists, Gillian Xia Faye Onghihon and Apsan Shaes Makie, who received guidance and training to help them prepare for the upcoming journalism competition.

The training was facilitated by Dr. Veronica Bito, a faculty member of UB Science High School and a journalism adviser. Through her expertise and guidance, the activity aimed to strengthen the students’ journalistic knowledge and skills, nurture their confidence, and prepare them to participate more effectively in the RSPC. The initiative also provided an opportunity for the learners to develop their potential as responsible campus journalists who value accuracy, ethical reporting, and the power of information in promoting awareness within their communities.

This outreach initiative supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education,
particularly the promotion of inclusive and equitable learning opportunities for all. By extending journalism training beyond its own school community, UB Science High School helps provide learners from other educational institutions with opportunities to enhance their competencies, explore their interests, and develop essential communication and critical-thinking skills.

Furthermore, the activity reflects the school’s continuing dedication to meaningful community partnerships and service-oriented education. Through the knowledge and expertise of its faculty members, UBSHS seeks to contribute to the development of learners from neighboring communities and support schools in preparing students for academic and extracurricular pursuits.

The journalism training at Kias Elementary School demonstrates how educational outreach can create meaningful learning opportunities, even for a small number of beneficiaries. UB Science High School remains committed to sustaining similar initiatives that empower young learners, strengthen collaboration among schools, and promote education as a shared responsibility.

Through these efforts, UBSHS reaffirms its belief that quality education extends beyond school boundaries and that investing in young journalists helps cultivate informed, responsible, and socially conscious future communicators.
