UB STELA Strengthens Future Educators through Comprehensive Pre-Training Assessments

Baguio City, Philippines – January 23, 2026 — Preparing future educators for the realities of the teaching profession requires more than the mastery of academic content; it demands a holistic approach that nurtures cognitive competence, professional aptitude, and personal readiness. In line with this philosophy, the University of Baguio, through its Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSEd) and Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEEd) programs, conducted a series of comprehensive psychological and aptitude assessments for student teachers in preparation for their off-campus teaching training.

The activity engaged a total of 61 pre-service teachers, comprising 35 BSEd students and 26 BEEd students, and was held at the Centennial Building, Rooms H505 and H507, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Organized by the Teacher Education programs in collaboration with the Centet for Counseling and Student Development (CCSD), the initiative formed part of the students’ structured and systematic pre-training preparation.

Facilitated by licensed psychometricians from the CCSD Psychological Testing Unit, Ms. Minerva Andres, RPm, and Ms. Fiona Mae Gorio, RPm, the assessments utilized four standardized instruments designed to generate a comprehensive profile of each student teacher. These included the Verbal Intelligence Test, which measures verbal reasoning, adaptability, and flexibility in language use; the Non-Verbal Intelligence Test, which assesses cognitive ability independent of cultural and educational background; the Aptitude Test, which evaluates judgment, reasoning, comprehension, and retention in teaching-related contexts; and the Personality Test, which provides insights into individual personality traits and behavioral tendencies.

The conduct of the activity was closely supervised by Dr. Dahlia Soriano, BSEd Supervising Instructor, and Mr. Lexter Eligio, BEEd Supervising Instructor, ensuring the smooth implementation of the assessments and strict adherence to ethical testing standards. Emphasizing the value of the initiative, Dr. Soriano noted, “These assessments allow us to understand our student teachers beyond academic performance. They help ensure that our future educators are not only intellectually capable, but also psychologically prepared to engage, inspire, and respond to learners in real classroom settings.”

Overall, the initiative directly supports the attainment of the BSEd and BEEd Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) and Program Outcomes (POs), while reinforcing the University of Baguio’s commitment to quality assurance and outcomes-based education. The assessment results will serve as an evidence-based foundation for targeted guidance, mentoring, and support throughout the student teachers’ off-campus teaching training.

Through initiatives such as this, the University of Baguio continues to uphold national standards for teacher education and affirms its dedication to developing competent, reflective, and resilient educators equipped to meet the evolving demands of the profession. Anchored on the teacher education programs’ academic year theme, “Becoming Empowered Advocates of Competence and Outcomes through Nurturing Learning Communities,” the activity underscores the role of pre-service teachers as active stakeholders in their own professional growth. By fostering self-awareness, collaboration, and evidence-based support, the initiative strengthens a culture of shared responsibility, continuous improvement, and outcomes-driven practice, hallmarks of a responsive and learner-centered teacher education institution.
