Students of the University of Baguio Science High School once again prepared to showcase their skills in campus journalism as they headed into the Division Schools Press Conference (DSPC), held on February 6–8, 2026, in Baguio City.
The team enters this year’s competition with momentum, having secured Second Place in TV Scriptwriting and Broadcasting (English Category) in 2025. Their strong performance was further highlighted by special awards for Best Reporter, Best Director, Best in Technical Application, and Best Script, achievements that continue to inspire their drive for excellence.
To sharpen their edge for this year’s contest, coach Ms. Rocell Aniceto sought the support of fourth-year Bachelor of Arts in Communication students from the University of Baguio. Under the guidance of UB BA Communication, Sophia Joyce Pagaduan, the student-trainers Eunice Fernandez, Juliana Cayacay, Steve Coyugan, Andrei Pascual, and Cyrus Lausan conducted intensive workshops on scriptwriting, news delivery, and technical application.

Ms. Pagaduan reminded participants of the discipline required in broadcast journalism, emphasizing that reporters must always “write for the ear and the eye,” ensuring clarity, accuracy, and audience engagement.
The collaboration between the two UB institutions has proven fruitful. The BA Communication students shared practical techniques and real-world insights, while the Science High participants responded with eagerness and determination. Trainers noted how quickly the high school students applied their lessons, showing promise despite still being in the early stages of their craft.
For the Communication majors, the experience was equally rewarding. It allowed them to bridge classroom learning with mentorship, applying their academic knowledge in a real-world setting. “Journalism is a craft that grows through passion, awareness, and dedication,” they reflected, underscoring the value of using one’s voice with purpose and conviction.

This initiative also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By strengthening journalism education and fostering collaboration, the program supports SDG 4: Quality Education, ensuring that students gain practical skills and equal opportunities to learn beyond the classroom. At the same time, the emphasis on responsible reporting and community-focused storytelling contributes to SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, as young journalists are trained to deliver accurate, ethical, and impactful information that empowers communities.
As the competition unfolds, the partnership highlights the power of collaboration in nurturing young journalists. With strengthened skills, renewed confidence, and the guidance of their mentors, the UB Science High team is ready to make its presence felt once again on the competition stage while also contributing to a more informed and engaged society.
