On September 11, 2025, the University of Baguio hosted the Student Leaders’ Convention and Oath Taking at the Centennial Hall with the theme “Empowered to Lead, Committed to Serve.” Organized by the Office of the Student Affairs (OSA), the event gathered newly elected Supreme Student Council (SSC) officers, Student Body (SB) or Student Administrative Council (SAC) officers from different schools/departments, and Student Legislative Council (SLC) School Senators for a day of orientation, training, and leadership development.
The program opened with a heartfelt message from Dr. Froilan C. Aspa, OSA Director, who reminded the student leaders that their efforts may not always be recognized, but their service leaves a lasting impact. He emphasized that the training and experiences gained in leadership are what leaders carry with them beyond their term of service. He also reminded participants that human intelligence must guide artificial intelligence, not the other way around, a thought-provoking reflection on the role of AI in modern leadership.
The morning session focused on building technical knowledge and administrative competencies. Student leaders were oriented on their responsibilities, organizational guidelines, and policies. Ms. Kirstein Palmares of the UB Accounting Office discussed budgeting, resolutions, and liquidation procedures, equipping participants with essential financial management skills. Meanwhile, Ms. Rhogem Fernandez from the Campus Planning and Development Office (CPDO) provided insights on venue reservations and logistical processes necessary for organizing successful student activities.

The afternoon session shifted toward leadership inspiration and innovation. Mr. Reuben L. Aslor delivered a powerful talk on “Empowered Leadership: Inspiring Change Through Service.” He explored the values of servant leadership, the price and responsibilities of being a leader, and the qualities necessary for those who choose to serve others. His discussion was filled with motivational quotes and practical wisdom that resonated with the participants. Following this, Dr. Donnavilla Marie Panday-Herbster presented her session on “Leading with Innovation: Turning Ideas into Impactful Projects,” which highlighted the importance of creativity and innovation in leadership, encouraging student leaders to transform their ideas into meaningful initiatives.
The highlight of the event was the Oath Taking Ceremony, where student leaders officially pledged their commitment to serve their peers and the UB community with integrity and dedication. This was followed by a fun and interactive icebreaker activity where leaders worked together to prevent balloons from touching the ground, symbolizing teamwork, problem-solving, and the importance of collaboration. The day concluded with closing remarks
from SSC President Princess Janynne Abreu, who commended the participants for their passion and dedication, followed by a photo opportunity to mark the occasion.

The convention had both immediate and long-term impacts. In the short term, student leaders gained valuable knowledge on policies, budgeting, and organizational processes, as well as fresh insights on servant leadership and innovation. In the long term, the event is expected to cultivate responsible, service-driven, and innovative leaders who will strengthen student governance and contribute to the holistic growth of the UB community.
The activity also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, by promoting leadership capacity building, and SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, by encouraging accountable and transparent governance among student leaders. The inclusion of sessions on innovation and servant leadership ensures that the lessons gained are not only impactful but also sustainable, providing a strong foundation for future conventions and leadership training.

As one student leader reflected, “I’ve come to realize that service leadership is the kind of leadership we need, let us all be reminded once again on why we join the student council and that is to serve the students, Lagi’t Laging para sa mga UBians.” Another participant shared, “The sessions gave me new ideas on how to create impactful projects for my organization.” These testimonies capture the true essence of the event: empowering student leaders to serve with commitment, integrity, and innovation.
Indeed, the Student Leaders’ Convention and Oath Taking was more than just an orientation; it was a celebration of leadership, service, and community. It reaffirmed the University of Baguio’s commitment to developing student leaders who are prepared to lead with heart, empowered by knowledge, and dedicated to creating meaningful change.
