Looking back at last year, the Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (JPIA), in partnership with the School of Business Administration and Accountancy (SBAA) of the University of Baguio, successfully held the seminar “EBIR Excellerate: Mastering Modern Tax Filing” on April 6, 2024, at the Centennial Building’s Computer Laboratory. The activity aimed to equip SBAA students with the tools and knowledge to understand the intricacies of tax filing—an essential skill in the Philippines, where issues of corruption and misuse of public funds remind us of the importance of compliance, accountability, and integrity.
A total of 10 SBAA students participated in the event, alongside JPIA officers who ensured the program’s smooth flow. Their active involvement highlighted the collective commitment of the SBAA community to continuous learning and professional growth. With the guidance of Sir Franklin Jan Wayang, participants learned how to accurately complete tax forms and why even the smallest mistake can have costly results. His clear demonstration gave students not just technical knowledge but also a sense of accountability in handling financial documents.

This initiative supports Sustainable Development Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, by promoting financial responsibility and strengthening the competencies of future professionals who will contribute to sustainable economic development. Proper tax filing ensures that resources are managed responsibly, fostering growth that benefits both individuals and the wider society.
The event also fostered camaraderie, with a raffle of exclusive SBAA mugs for participants and a token of appreciation presented to the speaker, Sir Franklin. These moments of celebration capped off an afternoon of meaningful learning.

In retrospect, “EBIR Excellerate” went beyond technical training. It reminded SBAA students that as future accountants and business leaders, their role in promoting transparency and economic accountability is vital in a country where corruption and financial mismanagement remain persistent challenges. By mastering the details of tax filing, they also take part in building a stronger economy and a more financially responsible nation.

Participants, JPIA officers, and the guest speaker gather for a group photo at the conclusion of the seminar.
