The University of Baguio High School held an In-Service Training seminar on July 30, 2024, and one of the topics was on Inclusive Education, featuring Ms. Sharon D. Aliping as the guest speaker. Ms. Aliping, a licensed professional teacher in the Philippines, has pursued various professional courses in special education. She holds certificates in advanced professional elementary education and advanced professional special education from the Maryland State Department of Education and has earned a Level 3 professional license in elementary and special education from the New Mexico State Department of Education. With her extensive experience and background in special education, Ms. Aliping provided valuable insights into inclusive education in both the Philippine and Western contexts. The seminar highlighted that inclusive education is still in its growing stages in the Philippines, emphasizing the significant work that remains to be done.
UB High School embraces diverse students, presenting both opportunities and challenges. Teachers have the chance to learn how to accommodate various types of learners and grow in their professional roles. However, the lack of knowledge and established processes poses significant challenges.
The seminar emphasized that the most crucial step in inclusive education is the identification and evaluation of learners. Without proper evaluation, managing cases becomes difficult, leading to classroom challenges and potential mismanagement. The seminar provided us with strategies for managing these students and, importantly, reassured us that our ongoing efforts are part of a bigger learning process. Admitting our current shortcomings in inclusive education is a necessary step towards improvement.
Education involves more than just the interaction between the school and the learner; it requires collaboration among parents, schools, and government bodies. Parents play a crucial role in helping teachers understand the unique conditions of their children while teachers support students in acquiring both knowledge and essential life skills. This partnership is essential for the success of inclusive education.
While the seminar was undoubtedly beneficial, it is merely the beginning. There is still much to be done and many processes to undergo. Nonetheless, this event marks a significant step for the University of Baguio High School in its journey towards inclusive education.
