Delegates from the University of Baguio-School of International Hospitality and Tourism Management (UB-SIHTM) joined tourism industry leaders, professionals, academicians, and youth members at the 2024 Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Annual Summit themed “Reimagining Tourism.” This three-day event, held from May 15 to 17 at the Grand Lisboa Palace in Macau, China, was hosted by the Macao Government Tourism Office and co-hosted by SJM Resorts, S.A.

The summit brought together international thought leaders, industry shapers, and senior decision-makers to foster dialogue, collaboration, and action towards a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable tourism future. The program included breakout sessions, a main conference, and destination experiences, providing a platform for PATA’s members and partners to address industry challenges and opportunities.

On the first day, SIHTM delegates attended the Education Roundtable, where discussions focused on bridging the gap between academia and the industry. This session highlighted industry support for academia in human capital development and allowed youth members to voice their career challenges. Delegates also had the opportunity to join the PATA Chapter Congress where they learned about the updates and programs of the different PATA Chapters including the PATA Philippines Chapter and the PATA Youth Symposium at the Macau University of Science and Technology.

During the main conference on the second day, delegates gained insights from experts on sustainable and innovative tourism development. They also took part in a Desserts Workshop at the Macao University of Tourism, learning to make Portuguese egg tarts and Macanese cookies with Chef Antonieta Manhão, a Macanese chef determined to take Macanese cuisine to the four corners of the world. The workshop was conducted at the Macao University of Tourism.

SIHTM delegates, Dean Jenelyn Magpatoc, and faculty member Rachel Grace Liclican, grabbed the opportunity to network with other delegates and benchmark on event management practices during the 3-day annual summit. Their participation underscored UB-SIHTM’s commitment to quality education and expanding the horizons for students being an active member of PATA.

Founded in 1951, PATA is a not-for-profit membership association that acts as a catalyst for the responsible development of travel and tourism to, from, and within the Asia Pacific region.
