On March 22, 2025, the School of Information Technology (SIT) at the University of Baguio reaffirmed its dedication to social responsibility and sustainable development through an impactful outreach activity in Barangay Queen of Peace. Faculty members, staff, students, and alumni came together to donate vegetable seedlings and fertilizers, promoting food security and sustainable urban agriculture.

As part of SIT’s commitment to food sustainability (SDG 2: Zero Hunger), the initiative aimed to empower communities by encouraging self-sufficiency in food production. The donated vegetable seedlings, carefully chosen for their adaptability to local conditions, were distributed to the community and planted by SIT’s National Service Training Program (NSTP) students in their respective homes. Many students, taking the initiative further, shared their seedlings with neighbors and community members in need, demonstrating a strong sense of social responsibility.

This outreach activity also aligns with SDG 2: No Hunger. Furthermore, the project supports SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, advocating for green spaces and urban sustainability. Encouraging students and community members to engage in urban gardening not only strengthens food production at the household level but also fosters environmental consciousness. It also contributes to SDG 1: No Poverty and SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities, as it supports vulnerable households by improving access to nutritious food and fostering a culture of sharing and sustainability. By promoting home gardening, the SIT community contributes to reducing food insecurity and enhancing local resilience.

The event showcased the socio-active nature of SIT students, highlighting their ability to extend assistance beyond the classroom. Their proactive efforts in planting and distributing seedlings reflect SIT’s commitment to developing socially responsible individuals who contribute positively to the community.

The School of Information Technology continues to champion initiatives that support sustainable development, environmental responsibility, and community empowerment. Through collaborations and outreach programs like this, SIT strengthens its role in driving meaningful change, aligning with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the University of Baguio’s mission to create a positive impact on society. This activity not only highlights the role of education in shaping responsible citizens but also reinforces the importance of collective efforts in achieving a sustainable and resilient community. With continued dedication, SIT looks forward to expanding its outreach initiatives, further embedding the values of social responsibility, sustainability, and community engagement in its academic and extracurricular programs. The outreach program was also attended by two BSIT alumni, Mr. Kelby Dati and Mr. Joshua Kwan, whose presence further strengthened the connection between advocating for sustainability and social impact.
