The world is constantly changing, evolving to fit the needs of society as we face the challenges of the future. New and emerging technologies are constantly being introduced to different industries, revolutionizing how people approach their work and allowing people to experiment with how they get their tasks done.
Artificial Intelligence is one of the fastest-growing technologies in the world. It is constantly developing new and innovative ways to deal with the demands of multiple professions, from software development to writing and education. It is quickly becoming a tool that surpasses convenience, and learning to properly and efficiently make use of it is an important step in keeping ahead of the curve.
In the interest of embracing it as a means to revolutionize the education system, the University of Baguio conducted an Artificial Intelligence Seminar Workshop at the RCB Dome that aimed to explore the ever-expanding reach of AI. A total of two hundred (200) participants were present during the seminar, with the most number of participants hailing from UB High School. Fifty-six (56) participants from UBHS were present, comprising 28% of the attendance. In close second place was the School of Natural Sciences with a total of forty-seven (47) participants, comprising 23.5% of the attendance.
Beyond just the capabilities of AI as a tool for learning, the seminar also delved into the ethics of using AI in developing the field of education. Though the field of AI offers a great opportunity for developing personalized learning, enhanced engagement, and improved outcomes, it is important to keep in mind that there are still ethical limitations that need to be considered. The seminar also explored the contributions that AI could have in pursuing the Sustainable Development Goals, such as SDG No. 4 (Quality Education) and 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).
The Artificial Intelligence Seminar Workshop is one of a series of seminars that explored new and emerging technology as well as industries that are integral to the education system. The other seminars included “Eco-Verticals: Building Green, Growing Smart”, a collaborative effort with the Horticulture Department of Benguet State University under the supervision of Dr. Leila Mary Ayban that delved into vertical gardens and their possible applications in pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals. In particular, it explored the impact of vertical gardens on SDGs No. 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), 4 (Quality Education), 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and 15 (Life on Land).
Part of the seminar series was also the “Book Publishing Process Seminar Workshop”, a collaborative effort with the University Research Center of Far Eastern University (FEU-URC) under the supervision of Dr. Aisa Arlos. This seminar focused on the importance of the publishing industry in relation to producing educational materials. It also explored the contributions of book publishing to the Sustainable Development Goals, in particular SDG No. 4 (Quality Education) and 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).
Across the three seminars, a total of 436 participants were recorded, with the AI seminar garnering the most number of participants, comprising 45% of the total attendance. The Book Publishing seminar garnered the second highest number of participants at 165 recorded attendees, comprising of 37% of the total attendance.
As new and emerging industries and technology continue to arise in modern society, UB hopes to continue being ahead of the trend when it comes to harnessing their potential for improving the educational system. Future seminars will no doubt explore opportunities for growth and development, ensuring that the education from the university will always be evolving to reach newer and better heights.
