September 10, 2024- The University Supreme Student Council (SSC) organized a significant seminar entitled “Arubayan 4: Gender Sensitivity”. This initiative sought to cultivate a profound comprehension of gender sensitivity, advocate for the utilization of gender-fair language, and confront pressing issues such as the violence inflicted upon women and girls. A substantial emphasis of the seminar was placed on the necessity to eradicate all manifestations of violence against women and girls across both public and private domains, encompassing trafficking and sexual exploitation.
Participants engaged in a thorough examination of how societal norms perpetuate these challenges and investigated methodologies for establishing safer environments within educational settings. The SSC highlighted that awareness and education constitute critical elements in the fight against violence directed towards women. Furthermore, the seminar explained detrimental practices such as child, early, and forced marriage, in addition to female genital mutilation. These practices not only disregard human rights but also result in grave physical and psychological impacts for the individuals affected. By enhancing awareness surrounding these matters, the seminar intended to empower students to advocate for change within the respective communities.
Through workshops and interactive sessions, attendees acquired insights into the significance of employing gender-fair language as a mechanism for fostering equality. The event culminated with commitment from participants to actively engage in efforts that support gender equality and protect vulnerable populations from violence and exploitation. In conclusion, “Arubayan 4: Living Beyond Gender” functioned as a vital platform for addressing pivotal gender-related issues while nurturing a culture of respect and inclusivity under SDG 5: Gender Equality at the University of Baguio.
