The spirit of generosity and community engagement embodied during Christmas is not only a seasonal affair but a commitment that resonates with the sustainable development goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 1, “No Poverty,” SDG 2, “Zero Hunger,” SDG 10 “Reduced Inequalities,” SDG 16 “Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions,” and SDG 17 “Partnership for the Goals.”

On November 18, 2023, The University of Baguio’s Office of Student Affairs, in collaboration with the Research Innovation Extension and Community Outreach Office and various student organizations, orchestrated a transformative event titled “The UB GIFTS,” aligning with the tenet of these global objectives.

“The UB GIFTS” was designed not only to infuse inspiration and foster fellowship but also to address specific SDGs. The collaboration with the Barangay Officials of Barangay Lucnab, the Daycare students of Barangay Lucnab, and the kindergarten pupils of Lindawan Elementary School exemplifies the University’s commitment to SDG 17, emphasizing partnership for the goals.

To ensure inclusivity, activities were thoughtfully organized, catering separately to children and adults. The active involvement of GSP/BSP students from the University of Baguio Science High School, Elementary, and High School Department in children’s activities exemplifies the commitment to SDG 4 “Quality Education” and SDG 10 “Reduced Inequalities,” ensuring that educational opportunities are extended to all. In addition, regardless of their background, a genuine friendship is immersed between the UB students and the pupils of Lindawan Elementary School and Lucnab Daycare students, which highlights the main goal of SDG 10, “Reduced Inequalities.”

The immersive engagement of the Management Team in the community reflects the University’s dedication to SDG 16, “Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions.” Through playful interactions and conversations, the team fostered a sense of inclusion, addressing the underlying principles of justice and peace within the community.

Beyond festive enjoyment, “The UB GIFTS” contributed directly to addressing poverty (SDG 1) and hunger (SDG 2). Participants were provided with complimentary services, including haircuts, manicures, pedicures, and body massages by the Visually Impaired Positive and Progressive Dreamers. This not only empowered the visually impaired community but also aligned with SDG 8, “Decent Work and Economic Growth,” promoting inclusive economic opportunities.

The heartfelt gesture of providing groceries to each participant underscores the commitment to SDG 2, “Zero Hunger,” as it reflects the University of Baguio’s acknowledgment of the adopted community’s role in its success. This act of gratitude goes beyond a seasonal celebration, embodying a sustainable commitment to eradicating hunger and reducing inequalities.

“The UB GIFTS” stands as a testament to the University’s dedication to building meaningful connections, fostering a spirit of generosity, and actively contributing to the global agenda of sustainable development. In doing so, the event serves as a miniature of the transformative impact that intentional acts of giving can have on communities, aligning impeccably with the spirit of Christmas and the broader goals outlined by the United Nations.
