In a heartwarming celebration of resilience and learning, the Graduation sa Barangay Pagbasa program has successfully transformed non-readers into confident young readers. The initiative, spearheaded by the Barangay Salud Mitra, in collaboration with the University of Baguio Laboratory Elementary School,- Outreach Program, aims to uplift children who previously struggled with literacy, equipping them with the essential reading skills they need to thrive.

This remarkable achievement aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education, which focuses on ensuring inclusive and equitable education for all. By fostering literacy among the most underserved members of the community, the program empowers children with knowledge, opening doors to future opportunities and a brighter path ahead. The graduation ceremony followed a structured program that reflected the significance of this milestone. The event began with a processional, as the graduates proudly marched forward, symbolizing their journey from struggling with literacy to becoming readers. It was followed by a prayer and doxology, setting a tone of gratitude for the transformation they experienced.

The atmosphere was filled with pride and joy as attendees sang the Pambansang Awit (National Anthem), Baguio Hymn, and Cordillera Hymn, reinforcing the spirit of unity and regional pride. Punong Barangay Nida L. Galace delivered a heartfelt welcome remark, acknowledging the collaborative efforts of the university, local officials, and the children’s families in making this program a success. Key messages were given by influential figures, including Dr. Julius T. Gat-eb, UBLES Principal, Easter Wahayna – Pablo, Baguio City Chief Librarian, Virgilio N. Escaño, Kagawad, Committee on Education, and Dr. Nino Tibangay.

Dr. Julius T. Gat-eb, in his motivational speech, encouraged the graduates to continue their journey toward fluency in reading and comprehension by following the ABC principle:
A – Active Reader: Cultivate a habit of reading with engagement and curiosity. An active reader does not simply decode words but understands and absorbs meaning, making reading a lifelong skill.
B – Better Self: Reading fosters personal growth, expanding knowledge and character. The graduates were reminded that literacy equips them with the tools to shape a better future for themselves and their communities.
C – Commended: Every milestone deserves recognition. Dr. Gat-eb applauded the graduates for their hard work and perseverance, emphasizing that they are now part of a community that values education and continuous learning.
The ceremony also featured intermission performances from the graduates, showcasing their talents and creativity beyond reading. Kagawad Eryn Kae B. Alvez expressed appreciation to all those who contributed to the success of the program, highlighting the unity and dedication that made this initiative possible.
As the event concluded, families gathered to celebrate their children’s achievements, expressing their gratitude for the opportunity that changed their lives. The Graduation sa Pagbasa stands as a testament to what can be accomplished when a community joins hands in the pursuit of education and empowerment.
