Republic Act No. 9275, An Act Providing for Comprehensive Water Quality Management and for other Purposes, or more widely known as the “Philippine Clean Water Act of 2004”, is the primary legislation in the Philippines that protects the country’s water bodies from pollution. The  Clean Water Act covers water quality management in all water bodies; abatement and control of pollution from land-based sources; and enforcement of water quality standards, regulations, and penalties. In addition, standards for the transport and disposal of effluent, sewage, and septage offsite whether offshore or on land as well as disposal of wastewater on land shall be formulated and implemented by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

The University of Baguio is committed to supporting Baguio City in its crucial program on water treatment and management. Moreover, the institution is committed to being a driving force to take a proactive step towards helping the City Government of Baguio to address the challenges in ensuring responsible wastewater treatment, knowing the importance of sustainable water management and environmental conservation.

Wastewater treatment, cleanliness, and safe disposal are all part of the sewage and septage management process that goes into providing and maintaining clean water. Wastewater can harm the environment and the public’s health if systems and procedures are compromised. Which in turn can lead to economic losses across livelihoods and industries. As part of the ongoing efforts to contribute positively to the community and environment, the management is pleased to announce the initiation of the construction of a Sewage Treatment Plant within the university premises.

The establishment of this Sewage Treatment Plant underscores the dedication of UB to foster a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable urban environment for both the university community and the residents of Baguio City.

This project aligns with UB’s core values of social responsibility and environmental stewardship.  By investing in the construction of a state-of-the-art Sewage Treatment Plant, UB contributes to the overall improvement of water quality in the region. This initiative will not only benefit the immediate vicinity but will also serve as a testament to the University of Baguio’s commitment to being a responsible and environmentally conscious institution.

The University of Baguio remains steadfast in its dedication to fostering positive change and contributing to the well-being of the community. Moreover, the university extends gratitude to all those involved in this initiative, looking forward to a future where the collective efforts result in a cleaner and more sustainable environment for generations to come.
