BAGUIO CITY — In support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the University of Baguio School of Nursing (UBSON), in collaboration with the S.A.L.U.N.-A.T. Initiative (Strengthening Alliances for Local Upliftment and Nurturing – Action Together), conducted a Basic Life Support (BLS) Training for Children and Parents on January 29, 2026, at the Barangay Lualhati Child Development Center in Baguio City.

The activity aimed to enhance community awareness and preparedness in responding to medical emergencies by equipping children and parents with essential knowledge on emergency recognition, proper wound care, correct bandaging techniques, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). By promoting early intervention and safety consciousness, the training emphasized the importance of responsible health practices within households and the wider community.
A total of 30 participants, composed of children and parents from the Barangay Lualhati Child Development Center, took part in the activity. The program was facilitated by the University of Baguio School of Nursing through the collective efforts of its clinical instructors, nursing students, and alumni, reflecting the university’s commitment to community extension, service learning, and sustainable partnerships.

Throughout the session, participants engaged in interactive discussions and demonstration-based learning activities covering Basic Life Support principles, proper wound care, bandaging, and CPR. These hands-on demonstrations allowed participants to better understand common emergency situations and appropriate responses, strengthening both knowledge and confidence in providing immediate assistance when needed.
Miriam Canata Chagyomon, Child Development Worker of Barangay Lualhati, highlighted the significance of the training in building emergency awareness among children and parents.

“BLS training is important because it teaches children and parents to be aware of Basic Life Support, such as CPR, choking, accidents, and other emergencies. Children are trained at a young age not necessarily to perform BLS, but to identify emergencies and know how to ask for help. In times of emergencies, immediate action can help save lives,” she said.
She also expressed appreciation for the continued collaboration with the University of Baguio School of Nursing, noting that the institution consistently delivers accurate, updated, and practical health education tailored to the participants, helping strengthen community awareness and emergency readiness.

As an immediate outcome of the activity, participants gained basic emergency response awareness, improved first aid knowledge, and increased confidence in recognizing and responding to emergency situations. In the long term, the initiative is expected to contribute to safer households, improved community resilience, and stronger partnerships between the University of Baguio and Barangay Lualhati in advancing health promotion and disaster preparedness efforts.
Through this initiative, the University of Baguio School of Nursing continues to support the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in promoting good health and well-being, quality education, and partnerships for sustainable development, by translating academic expertise into meaningful community impact.
