The University of Baguio’s Security office led by Chief Security Officer Jayton M. Anaen cooperates with the Public Order and Safety Division (POSD) namely its Deputy Chief Mr. Allan Faustino. The Security office has been strict in keeping the students free from the dangers of smoking and vaping, creating a smoke free space.

Marshals have been deployed in school entrances to check on backs of students to prevent the entry of vape, vape battery, lighters, momma, cigarette and e-cigarettes. This action began back in the school year 2023-2024. On the first semester the University has cooperated with the fight to end vaping by surrendering the prohibited items to the POSD with a total of 245 vapes, vape batteries and the like.

Once again were surrendered to the POSD. And on the first semester of the school year 2024-2025, a total amount of 430 prohibited items were confiscated and surrendered. The items were 416 vapes, 7 lighters, 4 momma, 1 cigarette, 1 weapon, and 1 tobacco.

The POSD Chief Deputy explains that after the items are turned over, they are put under water for some time for the mechanism to break, then passed to the Sanitation Office to be destroyed and treated as hazardous waste.

Measures were taken to make sure that bringing of prohibited items are shared to the school. The Supreme School Council and Office of Student Affairs have sent a Joint Memorandum to all students and employees, JMC OFFICE CIRCULAR OSA / SSC No.2, Series of 2024, the amendment of article III, the definition of offences and corresponding sanctions.

In light of all this, the POSD and University will continue to fight the battle of creating a campus free from vices propagating the bad effects of smoking and vaping, hitting SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 3: Good Health and Well being.
