On February 10 and 17, 128 University of Baguio High School (UBHS) grade 8 students took part in an exciting and educational Pizza Making Workshop as part of their Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) subject. The “Junior Pizza Masters” program, in partnership with Shakey’s Pizza Parlor, was held at the Shakey’s Kisad Road branch. This two-hour workshop provided students with valuable, hands-on experience in pizza-making, covering essential skills such as dough preparation, ingredient selection, and food safety practices.

During the workshop, students had the opportunity to craft their own unique pizza creations, learning the art of pizza-making from professionals. They also took a tour of the Shakey’s facility, gaining insights into the operations of a professional kitchen and the inner workings of the food service industry. The session emphasized key aspects of cooking such as teamwork, creativity, and the importance of using high-quality ingredients. By the end of the workshop, all participants were awarded the prestigious title of “Certified Junior Pizza Master,” recognizing their newly acquired skills and knowledge.

This engaging experience not only helped the students improve their culinary abilities but also inspired them to appreciate the work and dedication involved in running a successful food business. The event highlighted the importance of hands-on learning and collaboration, offering students a deeper understanding of the culinary world.

The “Junior Pizza Masters” program aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The workshop’s emphasis on hands-on learning supports Quality Education (SDG 4) by enhancing students’ culinary abilities and understanding of food safety practices. Additionally, by offering this opportunity to all grade 8 students, the program contributes to Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10) by ensuring equal access to educational experiences. The collaboration between UBHS and Shakey’s Pizza Parlor exemplifies Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17), demonstrating how educational institutions and private businesses can work together to achieve educational objectives. Furthermore, the workshop’s focus on the food service industry aligns with Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8), as it provides students with insights into potential career paths and contributes to the development of a skilled workforce. Overall, this engaging experience not only fosters culinary skills but also promotes broader educational and economic benefits.
