Guardians of Peace: How the University of Baguio Molds the Leaders of Tomorrow

Written by Dr. Charesma Grace K. Lud-ayen

For many, the journey through higher education is a simple rite of passage. But for Irashmos L. Canilang, an active trooper in the Philippine National Police Special Action Force (PNP-SAF), his time at the University of Baguio (UB) was the crucible that forged his character and career. As he reflects on his journey, Canilang highlights a fundamental truth: the road to success is rarely a smooth one. However, with the right foundation, even the rockiest paths lead to greatness.

Choosing a university is a pivotal decision, and for Canilang, UB was the only choice. Irashmos L. Canilang graduated in the university on May 2017. He describes the tertiary level as the most crucial stage of education—a time when academic knowledge must transition into practical, real-world application. “The knowledge imparted to me by my passionate teachers came in handy,” Canilang shares. “Not only the learnings but also the life skills they developed in me is of a big help. This school prepares their students for when they finally go out into the real world.”

For a member of the SAF—the elite rapid-deployment unit of the PNP—”the real world” involves high-stakes environments where discipline, quick thinking, and integrity are non-negotiable. Officer Canilang’s journey serves as a powerful reflection of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16, which seeks to promote peaceful societies, provide access to justice, and build effective, accountable institutions. The University of Baguio plays a vital role in this global mission by molding disciplined public servants through its comprehensive and high-caliber Criminology program, ensuring the next generation of law enforcement is rooted in ethics and responsibility. By empowering the individual and recognizing that every person has unique strengths, UB provides the essential “source” for personal and professional success.

Ultimately, this educational foundation strengthens national institutions as graduates like Canilang enter the workforce not merely as employees, but as principled leaders who uphold the rule of law and protect the community. No achievement is reached in isolation. Canilang offers his deepest gratitude to his “support system”—his family, friends, and the professors who walked with him hand-in-hand through every struggle. “I give all the credits to the people who walked with me. I felt no regret the moment I stepped on that platform to receive my diploma,” he said.

His story is a “salute” to the faculty and staff who comprise the heart of the University of Baguio, working tirelessly to turn students into protectors of the community. Today, as he stands on the front lines of national security, Irashmos Canilang carries with him more than just a degree; he carries the spirit of a UBian—ready to serve, ready to protect, and ready to lead.
