The University of Baguio once again marks another significant milestone this year after being among the official list of institutions in the 2026 edition of the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking.
Established by the Universitas Indonesia in 2010, UI GreenMetric is a ranking system that pushes educational institutions all over the world to embrace environmental sustainability through workplace management, research, and academic evolution.
The UI GreeenMetric World bases its evaluations on six core pillars, with an additional seventh added in just this year:
- Setting and Infrastructure
- Energy and Climate Change
- Waste
- Water
- Transportation
- Education
- Governance and Digitalization (new)
Each pillar targets a core area within an institution’s framework, ensuring that with each round of evaluation, a holistic system of sustainability can be observed. Each university that undergoes the UI GreenMetric World benchmarking passes through the same criteria, showcasing their dedication to supporting global change is deeply rooted within campus culture and operations.
This year marks its 17th edition of the UI GreenMetric World Rankings, an occasion marked by a total of 2,016 universities from 110 different countries participating in the rankings. Of the total number of participants, 1,252 were based in Asia, while 130 were based in the Philippines.
UB landed the 1,226th spot WORLDWIDE, while it also ranked 732nd in ASIA, and 75th in THE PHILIPPINES.
This achievement reinforces the university’s commitment not only to advancing education but also to promoting positive change that can leave along-lasting global impact. It highlights the efforts of the entire UB community – its students, faculty, staff, management, alumni, and even retirees – and their continuous support for a brighter, more sustainable future.
The results of the 2026 UI GreenMetric rankings reflect UB’s efforts to contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), mainly:
- Goal No. 4: Quality Education – Through its continuous development of academic structures and curricula in order to address the dynamic needs of the global community;
- Goal No. 6: Clean Water and Sanitation – Through the university’s efforts to provide drinking water to its students through its facilities and to ensure that the community is clean and safe at all times;
- Goal No. 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure – In the university’s different programs and activities geared towards supporting new and emerging technology and livelihoods that address the needs of the on- and off-campus community;
- Goal No. 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – By continuously spearheading, participating, and showing support for programs that target key areas in sustainability;
- Goal No. 13: Climate Action – Through its consistent commitment to reducing waste, promoting sustainable practices, and ensuring that the community is fully informed and has access to resources that will allow them to be more mindful of their role in preventing and reversing the effects of climate change on different levels;
- Goal No. 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions – By promoting community efforts within the university and empowering student leaders and advocates of all ages, both student and staff, to be key foundational supports across industries, and
- Goal No. 17: Partnerships for the Goals – Through its collaboration with UI GreenMetric World and other organizations, it continues to monitor its progress throughout the different SDGs, allowing the institution to steadily hone in on areas that are lacking while also bolstering areas that it excels at.
Sustainability beyond the ranking
As the University of Baguio continues on its journey, it will continue to grow alongside the community that it serves. Sustainability is more than just something that is ranked; it is a commitment, and one that must be upheld consistently and with keen determination. This is not the beginning of UB’s journey to becoming a fully sustainable and future-ready educational institution, and it will not be the end.
