On July 22–23, 2025, the First Aid with Basic Life Support (BLS) Recertification Training was successfully conducted at the FGB Hall of the University of Baguio. This training was organized to enhance the emergency response capabilities of UB personnel, particularly those from the Central Supply Room (CSR). Recognizing that emergencies can occur at any time and in any place—whether on campus, at home, or in the broader community—the activity aimed to equip participants with the knowledge, confidence, and essential skills needed to provide immediate lifesaving assistance. In doing so, the initiative also contributes to the university’s broader commitment to safety, preparedness, and community well-being.

A total of 28 personnel from the UB CSR took part in the two-day recertification program. The training served not only as a refresher but also as an opportunity to update their first aid and BLS competencies in line with current standards and best practices. Through the strong partnership with the Philippine Red Cross–Baguio City Chapter, the sessions were facilitated by experienced and dedicated trainers who delivered the program despite the challenges posed by the tropical cyclone during the event. Their expertise ensured that participants received high-quality instruction, combining both theoretical knowledge and extensive hands-on practice.

Throughout the training, participants engaged in a wide range of activities covering essential topics. These included the fundamentals of basic first aid, proper techniques in administering Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), the safe and effective use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), and appropriate responses to emergencies involving students, staff, visitors, and community members. Simulated drills and practical exercises provided realistic scenarios, helping participants to build confidence in their ability to respond effectively during actual emergencies. The interactive approach also fostered teamwork, critical thinking, and quick decision-making—skills that are crucial in high-pressure situations.

The active participation and enthusiasm of the attendees highlighted their strong sense of duty and responsibility, not only to the university community but also to society at large. By committing themselves to this recertification training, the CSR personnel reaffirmed their role as first responders who are ready and capable of safeguarding lives whenever and wherever emergencies arise.

This initiative also reflects the University of Baguio’s alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Specifically:

  • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being – by equipping personnel with life-saving skills and encouraging prompt medical response to protect health and save lives.
  • SDG 4: Quality Education – by fostering a culture of continuous learning, safety awareness, and capacity-building among staff, thereby strengthening professional development.
  • SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – by enhancing safety preparedness and resilience within the university and beyond, contributing to the development of secure and responsive communities.

Ultimately, the First Aid with BLS Recertification Training underscores the University of Baguio’s ongoing commitment to providing a safe learning and working environment. Through continued collaboration with trusted partners such as the Philippine Red Cross, the university ensures that its personnel remain well-trained, responsive, and ready to protect the well-being of everyone within and outside the campus.
