University of Baguio Forensic Science Interns from Class Sinag-Dasig Earn Data Science Certification

Baguio City, Philippines – April 26, 2025 — A new wave of achievement has illuminated the path of innovation and interdisciplinary excellence at the University of Baguio – School of Criminal Justice and Public Safety (UB-SCJPS) as 66 Forensic Science Interns from Class Sinag-Dasig proudly completed their Certified Data Science Associate (CDSA) program on April 26, 2025.

This milestone was accomplished through a successful partnership with East West International Educational Specialist Incorporated (EWIESI), marking a significant leap toward integrating data science with forensic and criminal justice education. Certification empowers interns with foundational competencies in data analysis, statistical modeling, and digital technologies—tools that are increasingly vital in modern forensic investigations and public safety strategies.

The certification is more than an academic credential; it is a gateway to applying advanced analytical tools in investigations, ensuring that science and justice remain at the forefront of public safety.

The program, designed to provide practical and theoretical knowledge in data science, included training in data visualization, programming basics, machine learning fundamentals, and ethical data practices. The integration of this program into the internship component reflects UB-SCJPS’s continued commitment to developing globally competitive graduates who are equipped to respond to the evolving demands of criminal justice and forensic science.

In her message, Dr. Charesma Grace K. Lud-Ayen, Dean of UB-SCJPS, expressed pride in the achievement:

“The completion of this certification by our interns demonstrates their commitment to professional growth and our university’s dedication to holistic, future-ready education. Data science is an indispensable tool in modern forensic work, and our students are now equipped to lead in this emerging frontier.”

Beyond strengthening technical competence, the certification has far-reaching significance for education, employability, and justice. By earning their international certification in data science, the UB Forensic interns have gained not only an academic credential but also a competitive advantage in today’s data-driven world.

The certification equips students with expertise in data analysis, interpretation, and problem-solving, competencies that are invaluable in uncovering investigative patterns and ensuring the accuracy of forensic processes. With training in handling large datasets and applying scientific rigor to evidence-based practices, the interns are now better prepared to deliver reliable insights in both local and international contexts.

This achievement also reflects the University of Baguio’s alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It advances SDG 4 (Quality Education) by equipping students with specialized technical and vocational skills that enhance employability, career readiness, and lifelong learning opportunities. It contributes to SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) by preparing interns to thrive in dynamic professional environments, fostering innovation in forensic investigations, and opening pathways to decent, productive employment in both government and private sectors. Additionally, it supports SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) by embedding data-driven methods into forensic practice, improving the reliability and efficiency of evidence-based processes, and advancing the technological integration of justice systems.

Most importantly, this leap directly contributes to SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions). By mastering data science, UB’s forensic interns are better prepared to strengthen justice institutions through evidence-based analysis, uphold fairness in judicial processes, and promote accountability in criminal investigations. Their training ensures that future cases will not only be solved more efficiently but also adjudicated with a higher degree of integrity and accuracy, safeguarding human rights and reinforcing trust in justice systems.

By strengthening both their technical competence and their ethical responsibility, these interns are not only preparing for successful careers but also positioning themselves as contributors to broader societal goals—bridging science, technology, and justice in ways that benefit communities and institutions alike.

The 66 interns of Class Sinag-Dasig now join a growing network of professionals who understand the crucial intersection of science, technology, and justice. Their success stands as a testament to the power of collaboration between academia and industry, and to the bright future that awaits forensic science in the digital age.

With this advancement, the interns of Class Sinag-Dasig now stand as pioneers in combining forensic science with data analytics. Their success is a testament to UB-SCJPS’s leadership in academic innovation and to the power of collaboration between academia and industry. As they step forward into professional practice, these young forensic scientists embody the University of Baguio’s enduring mission: to produce principled, competent, and future-ready graduates who serve society with honor and responsibility.

This certification program was made possible through the collaboration between UB-SCJPS and EWIESI. The 2-month training was conducted every Saturday through online classroom instruction, combining lectures with practical applications. Interns were also required to defend their outputs, reinforcing not only their technical proficiency but also their ability to communicate data-driven findings in a professional context. EWIESI provided professional trainers, resource materials, and certification assessments, ensuring that the 66 interns acquired globally recognized competencies. This partnership not only enriched the academic experience of the interns but also highlighted the value of sustained industry-academe collaboration in preparing students for international standards of professional competence.
