Community Outreach on Nutrition: Empowering Families Through Healthy Living

Written By Kierrha Alyssandria Maday-a

In celebration of the 2026 Nutrition Month, the University of Baguio School of Nursing once again demonstrated its commitment to community health through a meaningful outreach activity anchored on this year’s theme: “Sa PPAN: Sama-sama sa Nutrisyong Sapat Para sa Lahat! Nutrisyon at Kalikasan, Ating Pangalagaan.” The initiative was conducted in response to the call of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to actively support the nationwide observance of Nutrition Month through community engagement and health promotion.

On July 2, 2026, nursing students enrolled in Nutrition and Diet Therapy, under the guidance of their adviser, Mr. Darren Dale Antalan, in collaboration with SON ECOS Coordinator Ms. Fawn Maday-a through the School of Nursing’s R.E.A.C.H+ (Resilient Emergency Action for Community Health and Sustainability+) Program, conducted a community outreach activity for daycare children and their parents.

Recognizing that healthy habits are best cultivated early in life, the team facilitated interactive and educational sessions covering proper nutrition, healthy eating habits, balanced meal planning, and creative, nutritious meal ideas for children who are selective or picky eaters. Faculty members and nursing students worked hand in hand in delivering engaging discussions and practical demonstrations, empowering parents with knowledge and practical strategies to support their children’s nutritional needs while fostering lifelong healthy eating behaviors.

The outreach culminated in a meal fellowship, where the nursing students prepared and shared nutritious, child-friendly meals with all participants. More than simply providing food, the fellowship symbolized the importance of nourishing communities through education, compassion, and collective action.

Beyond celebrating Nutrition Month, this initiative exemplifies the University of Baguio School of Nursing’s commitment to advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By promoting proper nutrition and preventive health education, the activity contributed to SDG 2: Zero Hunger, which aims to end hunger and improve nutrition; SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, by encouraging healthy lifestyles and disease prevention; SDG 4: Quality Education, through empowering parents and children with essential knowledge on nutrition; and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, through the collaborative efforts of the University of Baguio, the community, and government agencies in promoting sustainable health initiatives.
