BAGUIO CITY, Philippines – In a heartwarming display of generosity and nostalgia, alumni of the University of Baguio Laboratory Elementary School (UBLES) returned to their roots, eager to make a difference. On March 22, 2025, they came together to lead the Barangay Pagbasa Program, a meaningful initiative aimed at sparking a love for reading among the children of Salud Mitra. Their dedication to giving back to the community and uplifting the next generation through literacy was evident in every shared story and smiling face.

The Barangay Pagbasa Program was more than just a literacy drive—it was a gathering of students, teachers, and community members united by a common goal: to create a culture of reading and lifelong learning. UBLES, long known for its commitment to academic excellence and social responsibility, took the lead in making this vision a reality. By initiating this program, the school reaffirmed its role in shaping young minds, not just within its walls but throughout the broader community.

UBLES Alumni poured their hearts into the program, volunteering their time to read to the children, share personal stories, and inspire them to embrace the joy of books. Their presence showed the power of connection—how the bonds formed in childhood can extend far beyond graduation and make a lasting impact on the next wave of learners.

This initiative resonates deeply with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). SDG 4: Quality Education underscores the importance of accessible learning resources and nurturing a love for knowledge. By providing books and engaging storytelling, the program fosters inclusive and equitable education, ensuring that young minds have the tools to build a brighter future. SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities highlights the need to bridge educational gaps, reaching children who may not have access to books or structured reading programs. Through this initiative, UBLES and its alumni took an active role in creating opportunities for all. Lastly, SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals reflects the strength of collaboration. The program exemplified how schools, alumni, and local communities can work together, pooling their resources and energy to create something truly meaningful and impactful.

As the children of Salud Mitra walked away, their hands clutching new books and their faces beaming with joy, it was clear that this was more than just an event—it was a spark that could ignite a lifelong passion for learning. The UBLES Alumni not only reconnected with their alma mater but also left a lasting impression on young readers, proving that education is a journey best traveled together, fueled by compassion, dedication, and a shared love for knowledge.
