University of Baguio’s Commitment to Climate Action Showcased at ASAIHL Conference

Two esteemed faculty members from the University of Baguio, Dr. Warren Galas Moyao and Dr. Adelle Sanchez, recently represented the university at the prestigious Association of Southeast Asian Institutions of Higher Learning (ASAIHL) Conference held at Universitas Airlangga in Surabaya, Indonesia, from November 19 to 22, 2024. This year’s conference theme, “University’s Role in Advancing Climate Crises Reduction,” promotes the critical need for higher education institutions to actively address environmental challenges.

Dr. Moyao, from the School of Criminal Justice and Public Safety, presented an insightful study titled “Towards Environmental Sustainability: Assessing Solid Waste Management Practices in Baguio City’s Business Sector” which he established in collaboration with Dr. Marilou Dela Peña, Engr. Lorelie Malit, and Dr. Jolly Mariacos from Baguio Central University (BCU). Their research highlights strategies for improving waste management practices among local businesses, aiming to create a culture of sustainability within the community. This presentation not only showcased his expertise but also positioned the University of Baguio as a proactive contributor to regional environmental efforts.

Dr. Adelle Sanchez, representing the School of Natural Sciences, engaged in discussions and country reports surrounding various sub-themes of the conference, including curriculum design that supports academic roles in climate crisis reduction and community services as frameworks for climate solutions. The conference featured a diverse array of presentations and workshops aimed at fostering collaboration among Southeast Asian institutions to combat climate change.

Founded in 1956, ASAIHL serves as a vital platform for member institutions to enhance their educational quality through mutual support and international collaboration. The organization aims to strengthen regional identity and interdependence while promoting excellence in teaching, research, and public service. This year’s conference brought together scholars and educators from across Southeast Asia, emphasizing the collective responsibility of universities in advancing sustainable practices.
