A Teachers’ Day holiday became another opportunity to extend the University of Baguio’s (UB) commitment to service, collaboration, and community engagement beyond the campus. Rather than simply taking a break from their usual responsibilities, administrators from UB High School (UBHS) spent October 2, 2026, contributing their knowledge and expertise to initiatives that support local development, strengthen institutional partnerships, and promote a culture of service.
On October 2, two UB High School administrators participated in separate community engagements, reflecting the University’s continuing efforts to build meaningful relationships with government agencies and local stakeholders. Through their respective contributions, they demonstrated how the knowledge and experience of educators can help address community needs and support initiatives that extend beyond the classroom.

Strengthening Values Formation Through the Baguio City Character Manual
Dr. Violeta F. Apiles, Principal of UB High School, joined fellow writers and stakeholders at Hotel Tugos for the proofreading and evaluation of the Baguio City Character Manual. The activity focused on incorporating comments, insights, and recommendations gathered during the manual’s publication presentation on May 5, 2026, as part of the continuing process of refining the material before its anticipated rollout.
An initiative of the City Government of Baguio, the Character Manual represents a collaborative effort to develop a resource that strengthens character formation and promotes values reflective of Baguio City and its people. By bringing together the perspectives and expertise of various contributors, the initiative highlights the importance of shared responsibility in shaping materials that can help communicate and reinforce values within the community.
Dr. Apiles’ participation also reflects the role of educational leaders in initiatives that support values formation beyond formal instruction. Schools contribute not only by delivering academic lessons but also by helping nurture responsible individuals who understand the importance of respect, integrity, accountability, and concern for others. Through participation in collaborative projects such as the Character Manual, educators can share perspectives informed by their experiences in school leadership and character education.

The initiative further illustrates how educational institutions and local government can work together toward a shared goal. By combining their knowledge and experiences, stakeholders can help develop resources that respond to the needs and aspirations of the community while promoting values that contribute to responsible citizenship.
With the refinement process underway, the rollout of the Baguio City Character Manual is anticipated in the near future.
Promoting Workplace Positivity and a Healthy Organizational Culture
On the same day, Mrs. Rowena W. Severo, Assistant Principal of UB High School, participated in another community engagement at Eco Lodge, where she served as a resource speaker for personnel of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) – Baguio City Jail Male Dormitory.
The seminar focused on sustaining positivity and reinforcing a healthy workplace culture, emphasizing the importance of maintaining constructive relationships, managing workplace challenges, and fostering an environment where personnel can work together effectively. Through interactive discussions, reflections, and activities, the session explored key topics such as workplace positivity, stress management, respectful communication, inclusivity, teamwork, and commitment to public service.
The seminar provided an opportunity for participants to reflect on how their daily interactions and attitudes influence the workplace. By recognizing the value of respectful communication and inclusivity, personnel can contribute to an environment where individuals feel acknowledged, supported, and encouraged to fulfill their responsibilities.

Stress management and teamwork were likewise important areas of discussion. Developing healthy ways to respond to workplace pressures can help individuals approach challenges more constructively, while cooperation allows team members to draw on one another’s strengths and work toward common objectives. These practices are especially relevant in public service, where professionalism, accountability, and collaboration are essential to fulfilling institutional responsibilities.
As a resource speaker, Mrs. Severo shared her expertise in support of the seminar’s objectives, reinforcing the importance of cultivating a positive and respectful organizational culture. Her participation also demonstrated how educators and school administrators can contribute to the professional development and well-being of personnel in other sectors.
The engagement highlights the value of sharing knowledge across institutions. While schools and correctional facilities operate in different professional settings, both depend on effective communication, teamwork, responsible leadership, and a shared commitment to serving others.
Celebrating Teachers’ Day Through Meaningful Service
Although October 2 offered an opportunity for teachers and school personnel to enjoy a well-deserved Teachers’ Day break, the two administrators found another meaningful way to celebrate the profession: through service, collaboration, and the sharing of expertise.
Their participation in separate engagements demonstrates that the contributions of educators are not limited to academic instruction or school-based activities. The knowledge, values, and professional experiences developed within educational institutions can also support initiatives that benefit other organizations and the wider community.
Both engagements underscore the importance of collaboration in addressing community needs. Meaningful partnerships allow institutions to exchange ideas, share expertise, and contribute to goals that may be difficult to achieve independently. When educators work alongside government agencies and other stakeholders, their participation helps strengthen the connection between education and community development.
More importantly, these initiatives reflect the University of Baguio’s continuing commitment to extending its mission beyond the campus. Through the active participation of its administrators and personnel, the University demonstrates that education is not confined to classrooms, textbooks, or academic requirements. It is also expressed through the practical application of knowledge, the development of meaningful partnerships, and the willingness to contribute to the well-being of others.
Advancing Sustainable Development Through Partnerships
These community engagements also contribute to the broader objectives of Sustainable Development Goal 17 (SDG 17): Partnerships for the Goals, which emphasizes the importance of cooperation and collective action in advancing sustainable development.
The participation of UB High School administrators in initiatives led by local stakeholders and government institutions illustrates how partnerships can create opportunities for knowledge-sharing and mutual support. By contributing their professional expertise to community-based activities, they help demonstrate the value of collaboration among institutions with different roles but complementary objectives.
For the University of Baguio, partnership goes beyond participation. It means turning knowledge into action, strengthening connections, and contributing to communities through purposeful service. It also means recognizing that meaningful development requires the involvement of individuals and institutions willing to share their time, expertise, and commitment toward common goals.
As UB continues to engage with government agencies and community stakeholders, its efforts reinforce the University’s role as an educational institution that values both academic excellence and social responsibility.
Beyond the campus, the UB spirit of service continues—strengthening partnerships, sharing knowledge, and creating meaningful opportunities to serve the community.
