Sanctuary of Champions: UB Science High School Soars to Victory at DSPC 2026

The University of Baguio Science High School– English Department once again proved why it proudly stands as the home where great minds meet after an outstanding showing at the Division Schools Press Conference (DSPC) 2026. With remarkable victories across individual, group, and school paper categories, the department showcased excellence, discipline, and passion for campus journalism.

Dominance in Individual Categories

Under the dedicated mentorship of Dr. Veronica Bito, the UB Science High School journalists delivered exceptional performances in various individual events:

  • 1st Place– Feature Writing: Rashemaiah Puruel
  • 1st Place– Copyreading and Headline Writing: Mandy Abarientos
  • 1st Place– Science and Technology Writing: Julianna Villa
  • 1st Place-Photojournalism: Dwein Calaunan
  • 2nd Place– Editorial Writing: Marxia Gadduang
  • 2nd Place– Mobile Journalism: Rod Ligot
  • 2nd Place– NewsWriting: Laurence Velasquez
  • 5th Place– Sports Writing: Duane Baroña
  • 5th Place– Editorial Cartooning: Jarizz Bergonia

These achievements reflect not only individual talent but also the strong foundation built through constant training and guidance.

Strength in Group Categories

Teamwork and collaboration shone brightly under Dr. Roselle Aniceto, as UB Science High School earned top placements in group events:

  • 1st Place– Online Publishing:
    Stephanie Joy Belingon, Bea Chrysantha Uy, Khrysha Mae Contridas, Alynna Vien Agustin, and Mark Louis Valdez
  • 1st Place– Collaborative Desktop Publishing:
    Lance Alex Mocnangan, Hyun-ah Noh, Kyla Fontanilla, Ariane Gea Caye Dy, Samantha Claveria, Rian Hingis Baden, and Marion Lee Colcol
  • 3rd Place– TV Script Writing and Broadcasting:
    Celine Kiat-ong, Rohanne Isolde Garin, Zion Choi, Cesiah Fernandez, Viktoria Elena Angela Tomas, Emmanuel James Obispo, and Sebastian Reza Estabillo
  • 3rd Place– Radio Broadcasting:
    Nathan Matthew Buyao, Xian Lucas Avellanosa, Jim Marcus Vallesteros, Khloe Danielle Quijano, Bernice Cielo Banta, Kayeliegh Faith Espejo, and Etidorhpa Suiluj Suriben

These results highlight the department’s strength in both traditional and multimedia journalism.

School Paper Excellence: GAZETTE

Guided by Mr. Fred Abastillas, the English school paper GAZETTE achieved commendable results in the School Paper Categories:

  • 3rd Place– Editorial Page
  • 3rd Place– Science and Technology Page
  • 5th Place– Layout and Design
  • 5th Place– Feature Page

A Special Distinction Adding pride to an already victorious campaign, Mandy Abarientos was awarded 2nd Most Outstanding Campus Journalist of Baguio, a recognition of her consistency, leadership, and excellence in campus journalism.

Above all, the University of Baguio Science High School– English Department humbly gives thanks to God, the supportive university, the dedicated campus journalists, parents, administrators, trainers, and fellow teachers whose unwavering support continues to inspire success.

With these achievements, the school directly advances SDG 4 (Quality Education) by fostering critical thinking and media literacy, while simultaneously upholding SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) through its commitment to ethical reporting and the pursuit of truth. This tradition of journalistic rigor not only cements UBSHS’s reputation as a “Sanctuary of Champions” but also empowers a new generation of socially responsible storytellers to advocate for a more transparent and sustainable future.
