A Journey into Cordilleran Culture with UB Bibak Ubbun Kaafuan, the University of Baguio Performing Arts Group

By Kevin C. Liban, LPT

To begin the First Term of School Year 2026–2027, the University of Baguio Laboratory Elementary School (UBLES) welcomed a meaningful cultural learning experience through UB Bibak Ubbun Kaafuan, the University of Baguio Performing Arts Group.

As part of their Music and Arts lesson on local dance forms, 92 Grade 4 UBLES learners had the opportunity to learn the Bendian Dance of Benguet, exploring its movements, symbolism, and cultural significance through an engaging demonstration and interactive performance. At the same time, 94 Grade 3 UBLES learners in Araling Panlipunan observed the presentation and gained a deeper appreciation of the traditions, values, and heritage of the Cordilleran people, for a total of 186 UBLES learners.

This enriching activity served as an inspiring way to open the school year, allowing learners to connect classroom lessons with authentic cultural experiences. Through the dedication and expertise of UB Bibak Ubbun Kaafuan, the students developed a greater appreciation for the importance of preserving indigenous traditions, respecting cultural diversity, and celebrating the unique identity of the Cordillera.

The activity supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by promoting meaningful and inclusive learning experiences:
SDG 4: Quality Education (Target 4.7) by providing learners with quality education that promotes appreciation of cultural diversity, heritage, and lifelong learning.
SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities by fostering respect, inclusion, and appreciation for indigenous peoples and their rich cultural identity.
SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities (Target 11.4) by strengthening efforts to preserve and safeguard the rich cultural heritage of the Cordillera through education and traditional performance.

UBLES extends its heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Beverly Laltoog, Ma’am Joanne Uraga, and UB Bibak Ubbun Kaafuan for making this memorable learning experience possible by sharing their time, talent, and expertise with UBLES learners. The passion for preserving and promoting Cordilleran culture has inspired the students and strengthened their appreciation of the Filipino heritage. Through meaningful presentations, the learners not only experienced the beauty of the Bendian Dance of Benguet but also gained a deeper understanding of the values, traditions, and identity of the Cordilleran people. UBLESS will look forward to more meaningful collaborations as they continue to nurture culturally aware, respectful, and globally responsible learners.
