The University of Baguio’s Bachelor of Arts in Political Science Program (UB-POLITIS), successfully collaborated with local COMELEC offices to initiate a one-day Special Satellite Voter Registration on September 7, 2024 held at the UB Cardinal’s Gym.

Under the leadership of the Organization Adviser, Mr. Nicanor Bastian, the BA Political Science Program Chair, Mr. Brian Flores, along with the dedicated POLITIS Officers, the initiative brought together COMELEC offices from Baguio City, Kabayan, Kibungan, Tuba, and Tublay to streamline the voter registration process.

The event offered different services, including new voter registration, reactivation, correction of entries, and transfers from post to local voting precincts. By creating a more accessible registration set-up, the initiative alleviated the long queues typically associated with the standard registration process.

The BA Political Science Students were active in assisting and guiding the registrants under the guidance of the COMELEC officers considering that a notable number of participants were students not only from the University of Baguio but included students from neighboring universities who were registering for the first time. Among the transactions recorded, the Baguio COMELEC alone registered 187 new voters, along with additional transactions that totaled 195. Other offices contributed to the overall count of 247 transactions across all participating locations.

Atty. John Paul Martin, the Baguio Election Officer, emphasized the importance of such collaboration, stating that they not only enhance intergovernmental relations but also foster transparency and accountability in the electoral process. He highlighted that COMELEC is always open to partnership requests, recognizing the significance of engaging communities from registration to election day.

Stressing the critical role of voter registration as a precursor to voting, Atty. Martin urged citizens to not only register but also actively participate on election day. “Our commitment to vote is vital,” he asserted. “Registration is the peaceful tool we have to effect change in government.” He urged voters to maintain high standards when evaluating candidates, advising them to consider credentials, competence, and track records rather than personal relationships or expectations of loyalty.

To guide voters in their choices, Atty. Martin introduced the “5C’s Criteria”: Commitment, Compassion, Competence, Conscience, and Companion. This framework encourages voters to seek leaders who not only have the skills and knowledge necessary for governance but also embody integrity and a genuine commitment to serving the community.

The Special Satellite Voter Registration showcased the dedication of the UB Political Science and the University of Baguio, as a whole to encouraging civic participation and enhancing the electoral experience for all. By partnering with COMELEC, the university is not just facilitating voter registration but is also playing a crucial role in cultivating an informed and active citizenry, which is an essential backbone of a thriving democracy. This initiative reflects the university’s commitment to empowering its students and the wider community to engage meaningfully in the democratic process.
