The University of Baguio – School of Information Technology (SIT), conducted a free seminar on the importance of Digital Footprint Awareness on June 22, 2023. Divine Aguilar, program chair of BSIT, and Erna-Kristi Martinez, dean of SIT, were the speakers of the seminar given to the students of Alejo M. Pacalso Memorial National High School (AMPMNHS).

Digital Footprint Awareness Seminar

The seminar was part of the university’s efforts to address SDG4: Quality Education. The seminar aimed to educate the students on the importance of being responsible digital citizens and how to protect their online privacy.

The speakers discussed the different ways in which students can create a positive digital footprint, such as by being mindful of the information they share online, using strong passwords, and being aware of the risks of cyberbullying. They also discussed the importance of being able to protect their online privacy through examples like the use of privacy settings on social media platforms.

They were also reminded of the ethical values that should be reflected in their posts; avoiding sexist sentiments (SDG 5: Gender Equality), racist comments, and toxic political views. They realized the importance of their online reputation by posting carefully and by building their professional images online as early as possible.

The students were encouraged to share their own experiences during the seminar. The speakers were impressed by the students’ knowledge and understanding of the issues.

The seminar was a success, and it helped raise awareness among the students about the importance of being responsible digital citizens. The speakers were grateful for the opportunity to share their knowledge with the students, and they were confident that the students would be able to use the information they learned to protect their online privacy and create a positive digital footprint.
