Written by: Ms. Marie Rose G. Subdi

The University of Baguio celebrates with Zeri Grace Dampulas, a first-year Forensic Science student, who secured 3rd place at the national-level Extemporaneous Speech competition held at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Manila. Her recognition at this prestigious event marks a significant milestone in youth advocacy for poverty eradication.

Ms. Dampulas earned her spot at the national stage after representing the university at the CARD-MRI #DevelopmentTalk2025 on November 15, 2025, held in Los Baños, Laguna. The first leg drew participants from various institutions, including Ifugao State University, University of Batangas, University of Northern Philippines, University of the Philippines Los Baños, Mindoro State University, Laguna College, CARD MRI Development Institute, Phinma University of Pangasinan, and Mariano Marcos State University.

The Center for Agriculture and Rural Development Mutually Reinforcing Institutions (CARD-MRI) works to eradicate poverty by providing microfinance, microinsurance, education, and other social development services, primarily to socially and economically challenged individuals and families. The #DevelopmentTalk2025 (#DevTalk2025) served as an Extemporaneous Speech competition focused on poverty eradication, aiming to amplify youth voices in addressing the issue.

During the competition, Ms. Dampulas delivered a compelling speech centered on her parents’ struggle to obtain an education, emphasizing how access to quality education can transform lives and break the cycle of poverty.

Beyond the competition, participants were allowed to engage with CARD-MRI’s mission through various activities, including a heritage tour of notable sites around Laguna and Intramuros, further enriching their understanding of community development efforts.

The university’s participation underscored its commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). This demonstrates leadership in reducing poverty and inequality while empowering students to champion inclusive education and sustainable partnerships, which are also championed at the university.

Reflecting on her experience, Ms. Dampulas shared, “On top of that, the competition taught me so much more—the value of courage, stepping out of my comfort zone, and embracing opportunities. It reminded me to continue improving myself academically and personally because there’s more to unlock, more opportunities to take, and more challenges to face.”

Lastly, Ms. Dampulas expressed her gratitude to CARD-MRI and the University of Baguio for allowing her to experience and empower through supported student engagements.
