The National Learning Camp (NLC) of the Department of Education (DepED), is a program that commenced in 2023, which seeks to “address learning loss by improving learning outcomes and supporting teachers to teach better.” This is being implemented in Dep ED schools during the summer term for students who were identified as needing additional support in selected learning areas. This year, the focus will be Reading and Mathematics for Grades 1-3 and English, Science and Mathematics for grades 7-10.

At Lindawan Elementary School, 65 learners were identified to attend the NLC from July 19-26, 2024. Following the NLC’s aim to “integrate fun and engaging activities to foster learner interests, socio-economic skills, personal growth and character development”,  the School of Teacher Education and Liberal Arts (STELA) Graduate School Programs (Doctor of Education, PhD in Development Education, MA in Education, MA in English), and supported by the Bachelor’s programs (BA English, BS Education, Bachelor in Elementary Education, Bachelor in Physical Education,  BA Communications and BA Psychology) reinforced learning through  physical exercises, story-telling, guided reading, group dynamics, and fun games to the campers.

Lindawan Elementary School is a partner school of the University of Baguio under the UB C.A.R.E.S program. Such partnership was highlighted during the official graduation ceremonies held on August 2, 2024, which was attended by a barangay official and the parents of the campers. It was highlighted that the partnership between UB and the school extends to include the barangay and parents, who all have vital roles in contributing to a child’s holistic development, and that by working together, children learn better. The parents were also given tips on how to reinforce their children’s learning at home by doing simple tasks such as reading to their children, assisting them in their school works, using household items as learning materials, and using the physical environment as references for learning.

This activity is also aligned with the commitment of UB to promote the United Nations Sustainable Goals, and taking part in the NLC was in support to the SDGs and for this particular endeavor, the goals on Quality Education, Good Health and Well-being, Reduced Inequalities, and Partnerships for the Goals.
