The University of Baguio continues to translate its commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into meaningful community impact through its active participation in the 3rd North Defense and Survival Convention, held from March 19 to 22, 2026. This engagement reflects the University’s strong dedication to promoting safety, resilience, and community empowerment through education, collaboration, and capacity-building initiatives.

The University was represented by Ms. Ervie P. Bid-ing and Mr. Jereign Francis Mejia, faculty members from the School of Criminal Justice and Public Safety (SCJPS), who actively participated in the convention’s learning sessions and advocacy activities.

The convention brought together local merchants, outdoor and tactical enthusiasts, survival experts, and public safety professionals. It served as a dynamic platform for advancing emergency preparedness, promoting responsible safety practices, and enhancing public awareness of survival strategies.

One of the highlights of the convention was a demonstration and lecture on Firearm Safety and Proper Handling, conducted by Mr. Jerry Vicente. The session emphasized responsible firearm use by discussing proper handling techniques, safety protocols, and risk awareness. Participants were guided on appropriate methods of carrying, storing, and using firearms to prevent accidental discharge and misuse. The lecture also underscored the importance of discipline, legal compliance, and accountability in promoting responsible firearm ownership and ensuring public safety.

Another key session focused on the Importance of Emergency “Go Bags.” This seminar highlighted the critical role of preparedness in emergency situations by encouraging participants to prepare personal go bags. It covered essential items such as food, water, first aid kits, communication tools, and important documents. Participants gained valuable insights into how a ready-to-use emergency kit can significantly enhance survival and enable a swift and effective response during disasters and unforeseen events.

A seminar on Practical Self-Defense Techniques, conducted by Mr. Norman Adefuin, provided participants with essential skills for personal protection in real-life threatening situations. The session demonstrated basic techniques for evasion, escape, and defense, while emphasizing situational awareness, rapid decision-making, and confidence. It also highlighted the importance of applying self-defense responsibly and only when necessary.

The convention also featured a session on Public Awareness on Safety and Survival Strategies, which emphasized the vital role of community involvement in promoting safety and resilience. Discussions included various survival strategies, risk reduction practices, and the role of individuals in emergency response. Participants were encouraged to become more informed, vigilant, and actively engaged in community-based safety initiatives.

In addition to the seminars and demonstrations, the convention showcased a range of products and equipment related to survival and public safety. These included firearms and ammunition, survival knives and tactical tools, emergency go bags, combat footwear, and other equipment commonly utilized by uniformed personnel.

Aligned with SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, the program emphasized disaster preparedness and community resilience by equipping participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to respond effectively to emergencies. It also supported SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being through discussions on first aid, psychological preparedness, and health-centered emergency response.

Moreover, the convention exemplified SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals by encouraging collaboration among academic institutions, government agencies, law enforcement organizations, and community groups. These partnerships strengthened collective efforts toward building safer and more prepared communities. The initiative likewise reinforced SDG 4: Quality Education by extending learning beyond the classroom through experiential training and community engagement.

Overall, the 3rd North Defense and Survival Convention stands as a concrete manifestation of the University of Baguio’s commitment to sustainable development—advancing education, strengthening institutions, and empowering communities to become more resilient, informed, and proactive in ensuring public safety.
