The School of Business Administration and Accountancy (SBAA) continues to solidify its status as a powerhouse in the Icons competition, delivering an electrifying and unforgettable performance of Shakira’s “Waka Waka” that earned massive applause and cheers from the students of the University of Baguio. Held on August 29, 2024, at the Cardinal’s Gym, the SBAA’s performance was a testament to their exceptional talent and determination. Through their commanding presence, dynamic energy, and unwavering confidence, they secured the 1st runner-up position, following their triumph in the previous Icons competition. This impressive achievement reflects SBAA’s growing influence in the field of performing arts and further reinforces their reputation as a powerhouse of talent and creativity.

“Waka Waka,” the iconic song by Colombian singer Shakira, was originally released as the official anthem for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. With its infectious beats and vibrant rhythms, the song captures the spirit of Africa and its rich culture. Its upbeat energy made it the perfect choice for the university-wide event centered around the theme of “city summer.” The central figure of the performance, portrayed by third-year marketing student Hazel Aguirre, brought Shakira’s bold energy and confidence to life, immersing the audience in the colorful essence of Africa. Aguirre’s dynamic stage presence, complemented by the powerful dancers, ensured that the performance was not only captivating but also authentic, transporting everyone to the heart of the song’s message. This synergy between the performers secured SBAA’s top-tier placement, making a lasting impact among the competition’s many talented participants.

The choreography for “Waka Waka” was designed to highlight the beauty, culture, and unity of Africa, with Afro-inspired dance steps and skits that celebrated the rich traditions and bonds of the African people. This was not merely a performance aimed at securing a victory; it was an opportunity to honor the essence of Shakira’s music and to share African culture with a broader audience. Given the song’s significance to so many, particularly as a nostalgic childhood anthem, the performers placed great emphasis on authenticity, ensuring their movements conveyed genuine emotion and energy. Their commitment to bringing Shakira’s spirit and the song’s powerful message to life resonated deeply with the audience, allowing them to connect with the performance on a meaningful level.

Through weeks of meticulous preparation and practice, the performers honed their skills to create a polished, seamless presentation. Their precision in executing complex choreography, while maintaining the core essence of Shakira’s dynamic performance, was truly commendable. The result was a visually stunning and immersive experience that captivated the audience from start to finish. Their flawless execution not only garnered well-deserved recognition but also showcased the high level of artistry and professionalism within the SBAA, ensuring their continued success as a powerful force in the performing arts.

The SBAA will continue to showcase its exceptional talent and skills in the performing arts, pushing boundaries with each performance and setting new standards of excellence. By consistently delivering captivating and innovative productions, the SBAA not only highlights the individual artistry of its students but also strengthens the school’s reputation as a powerhouse in the creative field. These performances will inspire and motivate the entire school community, fostering a culture of continuous growth and artistic achievement. As the SBAA elevates its performances, it will undoubtedly drive the school to new heights, reinforcing its position as a leading institution where talent and creativity flourish.
