University of Baguio – Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (UBJPIA) made history with its first-ever accounting quiz bee after the pandemic, the “Nanay at Tatay Cup (NaTCUP): Ang Paligsahan sa Pagtutuos,” held on November 9, 2024, which buzzed with excitement as 173 Bachelor of Science in Accountancy students put their knowledge to the competition.

The competition was divided into three cups, each tailored to different levels of accounting expertise. NaTCUP 1 focused on general knowledge and basic accounting for first-year students, NaTCUP 2 covered intermediate accounting, cost accounting, the law on obligations and contracts, the conceptual framework, and accounting standards for second-year students, and NaTCUP 3 challenged third and fourth-year students with all accountancy board subjects.

Despite the large number of participants, organizers successfully managed the competition, dividing contestants into groups of 30 per room for NaTCUP 1 and 2 (with 67 and 86 contestants respectively) and 20 for NaTCUP 3.  Fifteen outstanding students were awarded, including three NaTCUP Geniuses namely Aerielle Fianza (NaTCUP 1), Rian Josh Juan (NaTCUP 2), and April Joy Apolonio (NaTCUP 3)  who emerged victorious in each cup.

The competition aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

The NaTCUP was conceived as a tribute to the University of Baguio’s founders, celebrating their vision of academic excellence and the pursuit of perfection.  The competition served not only as a test of knowledge and skills but also as a platform for students to develop critical thinking abilities and gain valuable experience.  The organizers hope to inspire future accounting professionals and foster a passion for continuous learning and self-improvement.
