To foster responsible and ethical media use, 16 students and three teachers of the University of Baguio-Science High School (UBSHS) conducted a Media and Information Literacy (MIL) seminar for 136 pupils of its adopted school, Adiwang Elementary School (AES), last October 18.
The UBSHS students collaboratively tackled varied topics related to media and information literacy such as spotting fake or malicious news, being a responsible media user, securing online privacy, properly handling digital information, and others. Sheikh Mahrufa Islam, one of the facilitators, said:
“The outreach experience truly was such a fun and fulfilling experience. After a hectic week filled with school activities, engaging with the children brought me so much warmth and happiness, momentarily melting away my tiredness.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Rosie Beel Marzo, officer-in-charge of AES, and other some faculty members welcomed the UBSHS group. “Ang sasaya at super excited ang mga bata. Nakikita ko kung gaano sila kasaya for their ates and kuyas who will be teaching them today. Salamat.” Expressed Dr. Marzo while witnessing how their pupils actively participated in the discussions of the student speakers.
Through an official memorandum of agreement, AES serves as an adopted school of UBSHS. As partners for quality education, UBSHS commits to empowering the AES teachers and students through various trainings as well donations of school facilities like the computer units that were handed to them last September. The recently concluded MIL seminar was the second activity that succeeded between the two schools this school year. More activities are hoped to be launched soon!
