Making Motherhood Work: Gender Equality at UB

Written By: Sittie Al-meerah Paca-Darimbang

The University of Baguio recognizes women’s rights in the workplace through a comprehensive maternity leave policy aligned with SDG 5 (Gender equality), which aims to support work-life balance, protect women’s health and wellbeing, and ensure that motherhood does not hinder women’s career advancement.

In support of this commitment, the University of Baguio, through the Payroll Office, implemented the PAY-PO-006 policy that requires the provision of maternity benefits to female employees.  Under this policy, all pregnant female employees, regardless of civil status or employment status, are granted a maternity leave of one hundred five (105) days with full pay, regardless of mode of delivery, and an additional fifteen (15) days of paid leave is also given to those who qualify as solo parents. Furthermore, in cases of miscarriage or emergency termination of pregnancy, sixty (60) days of maternity leave with full pay will be granted.

During the 2024-2025 academic year, the Payroll Office processed maternity benefits for 21 female employees under this institutional policy. This provision exemplifies the University’s commitment to gender equality and its recognition of women’s rights in the workplace, ensuring that motherhood is supported rather than treated as a liability.
