The University of Baguio Centennial Hall became a hub of innovation and collaboration as the School of Information Technology (SIT) held its annual Student Colloquium on November 21, 2024. The theme, “Innovating for a Sustainable Future: Student Solutions Driving Technological Advancement and Social Stewardship,” highlighted the creative and impactful contributions of Bachelor of Science in Information Technology students in addressing real-world challenges. The event aligned closely with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, and SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.
Spotlight on Excellence: Award-Winning Research
Eight groups, each comprising 4 to 5 students, presented their research studies focused on network design for their respective stakeholders. Seven groups showcased proposed network designs, incorporating security features, well-defined network policies, and comprehensive implementation plans. One standout group, however, presented an implemented network security solution, setting the benchmark for innovation and practical application. The study titled “Network Security for a Public Senior High School in Baguio City” won the prestigious Best Student Research Award. This remarkable project was developed by the team of Mark Anthon Argel, Jasper Asmin, Mclin Ray Molina, and Angelica Pangilinan. Their research not only investigated the risks and vulnerabilities of the current network infrastructure and demonstrated the feasibility of implementing security measures but also addressed the critical need for safeguarding educational institutions against network-related threats. By enhancing the digital infrastructure of an educational institution, this project directly supports SDG 4 by ensuring faculty and students have access to secure and reliable digital resources.
Second place was awarded to the team of Alexandra Faye Austria, Jonah Maegan Rachel Blas, Renato Consolacion II, and Rona Nalundasan for their research, “Proposed Network Design with Network Policy for Joaquin-Smith National High School.” Their study presented an innovative and scalable approach to network design, aligning with modern technological and educational standards, furthering SDG 9 by promoting innovation and infrastructure development.
The third place went to Lan Neal Emiliano, Petterson Palomique, John Daniel Perez, and Kyle Ivy Dumo for their research entitled “Network Design for Mabini Elementary School: A Bridge toward the Smart Learning Communities Project of Division Office, Baguio City.” Their work underscored the potential of well-designed networks in supporting the digitization goals of elementary schools, advancing SDG 11 by fostering inclusive and sustainable community development.

Recognizing Individual Brilliance: Best Presenter Award
Angelica Pangilinan and Alexandra Faye Austria tied for the Best Presenter Award, demonstrating exceptional communication skills and the ability to effectively convey complex ideas to the audience. Their compelling presentations captured the essence of their research, leaving a lasting impression on the panel of judges.
Insights from Esteemed Judges
The colloquium benefited from the expertise of its panel of judges, including former SIT Dean, Engr. Elisabeth Calub, and two distinguished alumni, Ms. Christine Valdez and Mr. Rico Ngaosi. Their insights, particularly on enhancing network security measures, were instrumental in providing valuable feedback to the participants. These suggestions will serve as inputs for the continuous improvement of the School of Information Technology’s curriculum, ensuring it remains aligned with industry standards and emerging trends. Additionally, their contributions will help shape the direction of future student research, emphasizing practical applications and innovative solutions.
Bridging Technology and Sustainability
The colloquium not only celebrated academic excellence but also served as a platform for students to engage in meaningful discussions on technological advancements and their role in promoting sustainable development. By addressing real-world issues, these projects contribute to achieving the SDGs by leveraging IT solutions to improve education, build resilient infrastructure, and create sustainable communities.
As the event concluded, the University of Baguio reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing the next generation of IT professionals. By empowering students to drive technological innovation and champion social stewardship, the School of Information Technology continues to pave the way for a brighter, more sustainable future, contributing to global efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
